90 Day Personal Development Challenge

I just picked up the October 2009 issue of Success Magazine at the bookstore and it is packed with great stuff. I have a subscription, but I saw this on the stand earlier this week and I had to have it.

3 weeks ago, I made a commitment to read or listen to a good personal development book or audio for 10 minutes a day. 10 minutes! Seems pretty insignificant when you think of it. What can 10 minutes do?

One of the books I'm reading is The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson .  I started to realize that it's not the big thunderclap events that shape our lives. It's a series of small, seemingly insignificant actions and decisions compounded over time for good or bad results. That goes for any area of your life.

Jeff reminded me that if I have a cheeseburger and fries today, it's not going to make me gain 20 pounds this week. It's not going to cause instant heart disease, this week. But 20 years of that kind of habit, will cause deterioration in my health and might result in me having to pay someone $15,000 per stent to open my blocked arteries. And we often don't see that right now. Sure, we see it in other people. But I'm 44. I've got time, right? Problem is we think that and before we know it 20 years has passed. Back to...

10 minutes! Jeff Olson reminded me in his book that 10 minutes might not change your life today. But what if you read 10 minutes or listen 10 minutes every day for the next year?  Or maybe just the next 90 days? That's 900 minutes.

This simple concept really hit me. I knew that personal development needed to be an ongoing habit. But I would grab a book and get overwhelmed feeling like I had to make it all the way through that book, reading chapters at a time.  There was a problem with that for me. 1. I am a busy mom. I don't have hours and hours to sit, uninterrupted.   2. I can't absorb that much because my mind is just going a million miles a minute sometimes. 3. I can't think of a 3 right now, but you really can't start a sequence and end it with 2.

Now when I look at the book or magazine on my desk, I look at the clock. Okay. 10 minutes. Now I don't have the excuse not to pick up the book thinking the next chapter just looked too long for the time I had. Just 10 minutes!

Success Magazine will last you for a couple of weeks' worth of 10 minute readings! Plus, it comes with a free cd/dvd. I searched XMradio one day for a personal development channel, but I must not have a big enough plan. So I fill my cd player with Success magazine cds. And their website is also full of lots of free articles and tips too. I've also listed some other resources I've come across lately in the bar to the right.

I'm going to tell you already, in just 3 weeks' time, I've become more productive and what I need to do in my business has become more clear and I feel like I have more energy.

Join me in the next 90 days. Challenge yourself to 10 minutes a day. Mark it on your calendar along with your daily workouts. Then come back at the end of 90 days and tell me what happened!

What will your 10 minutes be today?

With ya Anne!
Greg bought me that issue last weekend and I love it. I've ordered the subscription as well. The CD is awesome. I listened to it while driving up to Ball State last week. Very good stuff. Since you brought up reading..... I'm a former librarian so I love you for encouraging the reading thing! People need to understand how important it is for personal growth and development.
